Gameplay Overview

This Game Is About Robots (TGAR), **is a 3D metroidvania about energy and how to best use it. The player controls a robot with the ability to transfer energy between machines, and must use this ability to navigate the eerie lower levels of Cog Springs, whilst under the watchful eye of C30, the authoritarian figure that rules the city.

Core Loop

This Game is About Robots (TGiAR) is a game about energy, built almost entirely around that single resource. The game works within this constraint to create an experience with a reasonable amount of depth, while still presenting minimalistic elegance. The end result of this challenge is a gameplay system in which energy simultaneously serves as the player’s armor, health, ammo, and mana.

Player Information

The Player Character is a short robot that was designed to manage energy, utilizing a large battery mounted to his back. Energy is the primary resource in TGAR, as it determines the player's ability to interact with items and affects some stats. For more information on transferring energy, see Energy System. This is a third-person game, with an over-the-shoulder camera, designed to support combat, environmental puzzles, and 3D platforming.

Player Abilities

The player has several abilities that allow them to navigate the environment, most of which they will unlock throughout the course of the metroidvania [ordering TBD]. Below is a list of these abilities.

Blast Beam

A Real Power Tool — Core Ability

Blast beam is the player’s primary tool in the game. This is a simple ability that allows them to directly transfer energy from an object to their reserve, or vice versa. Pressing left click (RT) activates a charge beam, and pressing right click (LT) activates a drain beam. Hitting any one of the game’s several Energy Actors with a blast beam will cause a transfer to occur. The transfer will continue until any of the following occur:
